Even if literature for organ and obbligato instrument is not really scarce, the search for music for this scoring, particularly for chorale-based works suitable for worship services, is rather time-consuming. The simple transcription of piano scores or of continuo realizations not intended for organ often proves to be problematic, at least then when the organist is not able to adequately adapt the piano part to the necessities of the organ (for example, the avoidance of all too quick tone repetitions or so-called Alberti basses). In chorale-based works, keys that do not (any longer) correspond to the Evangelisches Gesangbuch are often just as much a problem as are the great demands made
on the player and / or instrument – take, for example, many of the organ-plus chorale preludes by Sigfrid Karg-Elert.

The series ORGAN PLUS ONE attempts to remedy this and does so – in the sense of practicality also and particularly for part-time organists – with a certain uncompromising attitude. This practical orientation manifests itself above all in the following aspects:

– The chorale preludes have been transposed into the keys of the Evangelisches Gesangbuch when sound-aesthetic reasons did not preclude a transposition.
– Chorale settings with the organ-plus instrumentation have been added to all the chorale preludes.Thereby, the cantus firmus has not been assigned to the solo instrument as is usual, but
to the organ. The solo instrument represents an additional ad libitum voice. The setting can therefore also be used without the solo instrument for the accompaniment of the congregation,
thus providing alternative timbres for different verses. Moreover, in this way soft solo instruments, which could not lead the congregational singing, enrich the setting as a whole.
– Each edition includes solo parts for C, B-flat, E-flat, and F instruments, thus covering most of the “congregation-typical” wind instruments as well as string instruments.
– Most of the works in this collection are arrangements
and / or transpositions, whereby as a rule these take into consideration the keys of the chorales in the Evangelisches Gesangbuch. As a matter of principle, care has been taken into account to remain as close as possible to the compositional model. However, if this was not practical (for example, when the usual lower range of a wind
instrument would have been exceeded), performance practicality was given preference, and the model arranged accordingly.
– In order to further expand the possibilities of using the solo instruments, ad libitum transpositions
to the lower octave have been marked in a number of places. At the same time, registration indications have been largely dispensed
with in the organ part (in contrast to the edition “Advent/Christmas”), since they do not seem useful in view of the diversity of organ specifications on the one hand and of solo instruments on the other.

This diversity may also entice you to make small practical changes to the pieces on your own (for example, in the partly amended phrasing slurs), to in this way meet the specific possibilities and requirements of wind and string instruments.
– Last but not least, the practical relevance is clear from the church-year-oriented conception of the individual volumes.
The volume “Advent/Christmas” (BA 8501) of the series organ plus one has already appeared.
The following individual volumes are planned:
– Epiphany and Whitsun
– End of the church year (Death and Eternity, Funeral Service)
– Church Service (Introit and Postlude, Morning, Liturgy, Word of God)
– Communion (Music for the administration of the Eucharist)
– Praise and Thanks
– Special occasions (Baptism and Wedding) as well as the series organ plus two and an edition for organ plus low instruments.
